DALLAS — Baking companies are increasingly going back to the workbench to revamp and improve their product formulations, whether it be to adjust to regulatory changes or to better align with consumer needs. In continuing this string of product updates, Bimbo Bakeries USA (BBU), a subsidiary of Mexico City-based Grupo Bimbo, announced a set of comprehensive commitments to reformulate across its portfolio.

BBU outlined a series of milestones that will remove all artificial preservatives, colors and flavors from its portfolio in less than two years. By the close of 2026, the company will complete the removal of artificial colors from occasional-consumption products, including snacks and sweet goods.

Additionally, BBU is set to remove artificial preservatives and emulsifiers from its Artesano breads and buns, Oroweat breads and buns, and baked goods from The Rustik Oven by the end of 2027. Lastly, the company plans to finish removing artificial preservatives from its Sara Lee, Little Bites and Thomas’ product lines, as well as specialty varieties of Oroweat, by the end of 2028.

“Our Purpose is to Nourish a Better World, and that begins with the products we put on American tables every single day,” said Greg Koehrsen, president of BBU. “These commitments reflect our belief that quality and nutrition aren’t just what consumers expect, they’re what consumers deserve.”

BBU’s decision to focus on revamping its bread recipes reflects the essential role these offerings play in consumers’ diets.

“Bread remains one of the most nutritious, affordable, and accessible staples in the American diet, and that’s something we’re proud to stand behind,” Koehrsen said. “These commitments are a demonstration of our ongoing investment in giving consumers simple, clean products that do not sacrifice taste, nutrition or value.”

The company also anticipates completing these milestones ahead of each set deadline. This announcement follows major achievements from BBU and its parent company in this area. Since Grupo Bimbo announced its commitment to phase out artificial colors by the end of 2026, its US subsidiary has already removed these from its breads, buns and rolls.
