CHICAGO — As sustainable practices become more pressing throughout the baking industry, companies such as Mondelez International are making a conscientious effort to showcase how they are making a difference within their own operations.

The baking company released its 2025 “Snacking Made Right” sustainability progress report, a 72-page document that outlines Mondelez’ achievements in ingredient sourcing, climate action and packaging innovation programs.

“Our path forward is grounded in long-term, sustainable business growth — shaping, creating and accelerating the future of snacking for generations of consumers to come,” said Dirk Van de Put, chair and CEO of Mondelez International. “We remain focused on innovating with excellence, implementing long-term structural actions intended to enhance business resilience, embedding sustainability into our everyday work and delivering long-term value for our many stakeholders.”

Ingredient efforts

Under its Cocoa Life sustainable cocoa sourcing program, Mondelez met several of its milestones.  This includes working with more than 257,000 registered Cocoa Life farmers supporting profitable businesses and resilient communities.

Mondelez also joined Nestle, Mars and the Hershey Co. earlier this year to incorporate the TogetherCocoa foundation, an organization that supports systemic change via collaboration between companies and governments.

Wheat sourcing is also a main consideration for the company, especially as Mondelez has expanded its regenerative agriculture practices beyond its signature Europe program into North America and Latin America. The manufacturer has set a goal to grow 100% of the wheat needed for its European business biscuits production by 2030 under its Harmony Regenerative charter. Recent expansions of its regen ag efforts for wheat production include Canada, Brazil and Argentina.

Emissions and packaging gains

The company highlighted several achievements, including the decrease in greenhouse gas emissions by about 21% across its value chain vs. 2018. Mondelez also noted its increased energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy across its operations, with about 70% of the electricity used in its manufacturing sites in 2025 being renewable vs. 54% reported in 2024.

On the packaging side, the company also stated that approximately 96% of its packaging is designed to be recyclable. Business-wide packaging sustainability design requirements have helped further this commitment to encourage consistency with industry standards.
