VERNON HILLS, IL — Due to the recent voluntary recall of Jif peanut butter, Prairie City Bakery is voluntarily recalling select lots of its Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Ooey Gooey Butter Cake.
The J.M. Smucker company issued a voluntary recall on the peanut butter on May 20 due to the potential for Salmonella contamination. Prairie City Bakery initiated the recall after its copacker, which produces and packages this product, was alerted by Jif of the peanut butter recall.
Prairie City Bakery’s recall affects 50,220 individually wrapped cakes containing cooked peanut butter. The cakes were sold in 2-oz. packages and in ten packs of 2-oz. packages at gas stations and convenience stores nationwide.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and immunocompromised people. Healthy people infected with the organism often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, infection can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses like arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
No illnesses have been reported at the time of the press release.
The recalled product should be disposed or returned to the place of purchase. Consumers should not consume or handle the cakes outside of their packaging.
