KANSAS CITY MO — Commercial Baking will kick off the fourteenth season of its award-winning podcast, Troubleshooting Innovation, on March 2. This season, sponsored by Coperion, will feature Trina Bediako, CEO of Norwalk, OH-based New Horizons Baking Co.
As the second generation of leadership for the family-owned bakery, Bediako will walk listeners through what innovation looks like through the eyes of a leader who has balanced generational wisdom and youthful disruption to expand a family bakery business in unconventional ways.
Horizons was founded by Bediako’s father, Tim Brown, just as he was on the cusp of retiring. Over the past four decades, the business has grown from one dedicated bun facility to a vertically integrated food manufacturing business. It is a top-rated supplier in the McDonald’s network, providing buns and English muffins, as well as a provider of wet and dry blended ingredients for several foodservice customers.
“Trina is living proof that, even in a family business, leadership is earned, not simply bestowed upon the next generation,” said Joanie Spencer, editor-in-chief of Commercial Baking and host of Troubleshooting Innovation. “Over the course of five weeks, Trina shares the challenges she has faced in her career and the different tactics she has used to overcome them. She’s a leader who knows about the business of food manufacturing and the value that people bring to it. She learned lessons from her father and is passing those — and a few of her own — to the next generation.”
Together, Bediako and Spencer delve into what it takes to grow a bakery business into one that will last for generations to come.
The full season, which will run every Sunday in March, will be available on the Commercial Baking website, Apple podcasts, YouTube and Spotify.
Attendees of the American Society of Baking’s BakingTECH conference, Feb. 15-19 at the Renaissance in Orlando, can experience a live preview of Troubleshooting Innovation featuring Bediako on Feb. 17 from 3:45-4:15 p.m. ET in the hotel atrium.
