SAN DIEGO and WASHINGTON, DC — BakeMark, a bakery ingredients supplier and distributor with more than 38 branches  across the US and Canada, partnered with The Salvation Army to host National Donut Day events in two cities: the second annual Donut Festival in San Diego, and the World Donut Eating Championship in Washington, DC.

BakeMark has sponsored National Donut Day for the past 16 years, showcasing customer-favorite donut shops in San Diego. This year, the second annual Donut Festival was held June 6 aboard the U.S.S. Midway Museum, paying homage to military veterans and honoring them for their service.

“Our main goal with this event was to bring the community together in celebration of National Donut Day while also raising awareness about military veterans struggling to make ends meet in San Diego County,” said Major Amy Reardon, divisional secretary for the Salvation Army San Diego. “Through the generosity of BakeMark, The Midway and the support of this community, we aim to make a big impact.”

The free event included an assortment of activities and encouraged attendees to join the Salvation Army’s efforts to fight food insecurity and assist those in need.

On the same day in Washington, DC, BakeMark teamed up with The Salvation Army and Major League Eating for the eighth annual National Donut Day World Donut Eating Championship. The event provided attendees with free donuts from local donut shops. James Webb and Nick Wehry, the third- and seventh-ranked competitive eaters in the world, respectively, took part in the gathering.

The Salvation Army raises funds for veteran services and also honors the memory of its volunteer “Donut Lassies,” who served donuts and coffee to soldiers during World War I. The Lassies were the only female non-military personnel stationed on the front lines during the war.
