Last year, the baking company undertook initiatives across its network to promote more sustainable and healthier communities. This included a facility-wide upgrade to an industrial R-22 refrigeration system that uses ammonia, a sustainable refrigerant that does not contribute to global warming or impact the ozone layer.

Aspire Bakeries diverted more than 95% of its waste from landfills and reduced its carbon emissions by more than 15%.

By replacing this system, Aspire Bakeries reduced its carbon footprint by nearly 2%, marking its largest sustainability initiative in the company’s history.

Additionally, Aspire Bakeries completed two energy efficiency projects in California: thermal insulation at its Van Nuys bakery and panel cooling replacements at its Stockton location.

The thermal insulation project involved installing insulated blankets on valves, strainers and other equipment relevant during a thermal audit. The panel cooling project replaced coolers for 12 electric panels, resulting in an 85% reduction in electricity use. Combined, both projects reduced Aspire Bakeries greenhouse gas emissions by more than 15%, equating to 194 metric tons of CO2 per year.
