BENTONVILLE, AR — Following the FDA’s announcement that food manufacturers have until January 2027 to reformulate products that include Red No. 3, as well as the decree of additional changes for manufacturers related to food dyes, Walmart U.S. is taking heed.

The grocery giant is making major moves to eliminate synthetic dyes and the use of 30 additional ingredients that include certain preservatives, artificial sweeteners and fat substitutes from its private brand food products. This action supports the company’s mission to provide consumers with high-quality, naturally made products.

“Our customers have told us they want products made with simpler, more familiar ingredients — and we’ve listened,” said John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart U.S. “By eliminating synthetic dyes and other ingredients, we’re reinforcing our promise to deliver affordable food that families can feel good about.”

All Walmart U.S. food private brands — such as Great Value, Marketside, Freshness Guaranteed and bettergoods — will undergo this change in support of a more transparent food system.

Walmart U.S. is also working with suppliers to adjust formulations and source alternative ingredients. The reformulated products will begin rolling out over the next few months, with longer lead time changes planned to wrap up by the January 2027 deadline. As of today, approximately 90% of Walmart U.S. food private brand products are free from synthetic dyes.

“This commitment demonstrates how Walmart is responding to changing customer preferences, while also setting the standard for providing exceptional quality and innovation at an outstanding value,” Furner said.
