CHICAGO — Kellanova announced plans to achieve 90% renewable electricity by the end of 2024 in its company-owned North American manufacturing operation through a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) signed in 2021.
This continues the company’s goal to achieve 100% renewable electricity at global Kellanova-owned facilities by the close of 2030.
“Today’s announcement is a big step toward achieving our Better Days Promise goal of 100 percent renewable electricity across our global manufacturing facilities by the end of 2030,” said Janelle Meyers, chief sustainability officer of Kellanova. “As a global food company, we have a significant role to play in helping to reduce reliance on limited energy sources across our value chain and creating a positive impact for people and the planet.”
The company signed the long-term wind energy VPPA for approximately 360 gigawatt hours of wind electricity per year, generated from a wind farm located in north central Texas. This farm adds clean energy resources to its community’s local grid which is equivalent to 90% of the electricity volume used in Kellanova’s North American manufacturing locations.
On a global scale, Kellanova has made strides through various programs, VPPAs and renewable energy certificates. For example, the company has grown its use of renewable energy in its Asia, Middle East and Africa region from 1% in 2018 to 33% in 2023.
Results from the efforts made in 2024 will be published in Kellanova’s social and environmental report, set to be released in 2025.
