In Memoriam: George Poulos, Alpha Baking

OMAHA, NE — George H. “Gus” Poulos, past American Society of Baking (ASB) board chair and director of manufacturing at Alpha Baking Co., passed away on June 20. He was 87.

Poulos was a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving for two years before settling down with his wife, Panayiota Grillas, in Council Bluffs, IA.

He is survived by his children, Hellen Elfring, Harry Poulos, Billie Poulos-Rambo and Nick Poulos; his brothers, Dan and Pete Poulos; his sister Mary Todis; as well as many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his position on the ASB board and at Alpha Baking, Poulos served as president of the Bakers Club of Chicago, and held various positions with Knead Dough Baking Co., Caravan Products, and Gateway Baking Co. He is also a recipient of the Robert A. Fischer Distinguished Service Award, given to an ASB member who has contributed outstanding service and leadership to the Society.

He will be remembered for his contributions to the food and beverage industry both locally and globally, and his commitment to excellence.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church.
