SWEDESBORO, NJ — With a manufacturing footprint established in 2012, Dr. Schar remains a leading provider of gluten-free baked goods, with a portfolio that encompasses both sweet and savory products.

In an effort to strengthen the baking company’s culture of innovation and proximity, Dr. Schar invested $28 million in its production and office space in Swedesboro, NJ. The investment incorporated state-of-the-art enhancements to the bakery facility, which includes expanding capabilities in its segment of sliced breads, buns, ciabattas and bagels.

Alongside the production upgrades, Dr. Schar has prioritized cultivating a well-rounded office environment for its employees.

“This expansion is about more than just physical space — it’s about investing in our people and the future of our products,” said Jim Morris, GM of Schar North America. “We’re excited to continue growing as a team and delivering the quality our customers expect while creating a workplace our employees are proud of.”

Dr. Schar team members will now have access to a new on-site canteen — staffed with a professional chef — providing fresh meals and a comfortable space to recharge. The company also built a community employee garden and outdoor eating area, designed to foster collaboration and relaxation.

“A new place for our plant workers was a big piece of this investment,” Morris said. “It was important that we have an on-site cafeteria that has fresh food in close quarters to provide our employees affordable meal options and a space to relax.”

The gluten-free baked goods manufacturer also consolidated its operations by relocating its Lyndhurst, NJ, office team to the expanded Swedesboro facility. This strategic move underscores Dr. Schar’s commitment to strengthening the company culture.

“One of our core values is proximity, and we look at proximity to the consumer in various ways,” he said. “One way is to ensure the product is easy to access — whether the consumer is seeking gluten-free products at the grocery store or in a restaurant — and the fact we’re making more of that here versus importing it from Europe allows us to have fresher items and more control over the supply chain of where we send those items.”

The expansion also grants Dr. Schar the ability to price its items more competitively and integrate all segments of operations into one facility. By combining manufacturing with R&D, regulatory, sales, marketing and logistics, the company can enhance cross-department collaboration and in-office networking.
