OVERLAND PARK, KS — Since 2001, BEMA has recognized the dedication of its volunteer leadership with the Fred Springer Lifetime Achievement Award. The organization created the award for those who have gone above and beyond to impact BEMA, and the industry, in a variety of ways.

“The esteemed recipients of BEMA’s Lifetime Achievement Award demonstrate the plentiful and purposeful rewards of service for our industry as well as for the individual,” said Kerwin Brown, president and CEO of BEMA.

This year, BEMA will present Dennis Gunnell, president of Formost Fuji, with the 2025 award during its annual convention, to be held June 25-28 in Puerto Rico.

Recipients of this award have been known for making a mark throughout their career, personifying a sense of momentum that permeates throughout BEMA membership, including support for the organization and participation in and service to the industry. Throughout his career and BEMA service, Gunnell has embodied these qualities. With four decades of industry experience, he’s been an avid participant in BEMA, having attended his first convention in 1996. That was a springboard to decades of dedicating time and thought leadership, from committee participation to serving as a board member and, ultimately, 2006-07 board chair, followed by his role as committee chair for the 2022 International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE).

During his tenure on the IBIE executive committee, Gunnell was instrumental in broadening the show’s reach through an increased emphasis on retail and artisan and expanding IBIEducate, now known as the baking industry’s most comprehensive education program.

Gunnell’s work ethic and team mentality comes from his years as a professional athlete.

“You need to keep improving and refining, and sometimes it’s hard to look at ourselves in this way,” he said. “In sports, game day is just a small part of it. The rest of the week, you’re always looking for ways to get better.”

With a personal belief that service is self-fulfilling, Gunnell prioritizes contributions over credit.

“It’s important to know that being a leader doesn’t mean you always need to be out in front,” Gunnell told Commercial Baking in 2022. “I was fortunate enough to watch people manage in that way, and it has impacted my own style.”

For Gunnell, it’s about more than giving back; he believes that doing good work reaps returns beyond measure through lessons learned and a lifetime of unbreakable bonds. In that regard, the Fred Springer Lifetime Achievement Award is an unexpected bonus.

“This award comes as a surprise and a great honor,” he said. “It is recognition of a lot of work, a symbol of 40 years of building relationships, making progress and putting myself out there for the industry.”
