WASHINGTON, DC — As the temperature cools and the leaves start to fall, members of the baking industry are gearing up for the increased indulgence that the holidays bring. Though they don’t have to wait long; November is National Bread Month, and the American Bakers Association (ABA) is imploring the industry to celebrate.

ABA is honoring the power of grains with a customized toolkit containing messaging materials such as graphics and social media copy. The toolkit can be utilized by bakers looking to connect with their communities and share the love of bread.

One of the ways bakers can employ the toolkit is by spreading information and debunking myths about bread.

Consumers often think of bread as ‘bad’ and opt for low-carb, better-for-you products. But one of bread’s key attributes is its role as an excellent source of carbohydrates, which provide fuel for the body. Despite this, the low-carb trend is still present, with a recent rise in misinformation regarding nutrition on social media.

On Commercial Baking’s Troubleshooting Innovation podcast, Charlotte Martin, registered dietitian and consultant for the Grain Foods Foundation, debunked these common bread myths.

“I find that, thanks to social media, a lot of people these days have become ‘carbophobes,’” Martin said. “They don’t necessarily stop eating carbs, but they’re afraid of them and oftentimes they feel guilty after eating carb-rich foods like bread.”

Bakers can deploy social media copy from the toolkit that highlights the true benefits of grain food — including facts about its essential vitamins and minerals — and how consumers can celebrate the holidays by making bread the star of their festive meals.
