PENNSAUKEN, NJ — Puratos, a global bakery ingredient manufacturer, has declared its commitment to removing titanium dioxide (TiO2) from all its products by 2025.

The naturally occurring mineral has been common in food for decades, serving as a colorant to brighten the color of white foods such as dairy products, icings, fillings and chocolate.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has prohibited the mineral as a food additive. Although a similar policy has not been placed in the US, Puratos proactively made the decision to remove TiO2 from all its products.

“For us, it was an easy decision,” said Jessica Blondeel, product director for patisserie at Puratos. “Our purpose is to move the planet forward by creating innovative food solutions for the health and well-being of people everywhere. Cleaning up our labels is a natural step towards achieving this goal.”

After having removed TiO2 from all compound coatings, icings and glazes, Puratos has strategized a phase out plan for the remaining products to meet the 2025 deadline. Cream fillings are on track to make the goal of being free of TiO2 by the deadline, but samples are available for consumers interested in making the switch sooner.
