WASHINGTON — Ahead of the Sweets and Snacks Expo taking place in Chicago next week, the National Confectioners Association (NCA) has released a teaser of the top trends that will be on display.

“For 25 years, The Sweets and Snacks Expo has been the most significant driver of candy and snack flavor and product trends in North America, and 2022 is no different,” said John Downs, president and CEO of the NCA. “Attendees at this year’s show will be able to taste the products that will shape store shelves for weeks, months and years to come.”

S’mores-flavored sweets and snacks are predicted to dominate shelf space this year, putting campfire flavor into portable form. Summer will be the time for this flavor to shine according to the report, but it will have staying power into cooler seasons as well.

Flavor intensity is also at the center of product development, whether it be salty, sweet or spicy. Sour is even gaining consumer attention — if a snack or sweet packs an intense flavor experience, it will meet the mark for consumers looking for something more.

New takes on old favorites, or “newstalgia” as the NCA coins it, are also popular. Fresh takes on classics consumers know and love can bring a beloved flavor to people in new ways, renewing interest in staple snacks and treats. This could be new sizes, new flavor pairings and more.

Packaging will also be highlighted at the expo, with snack sizes that provide options being top dog. Since consumers treat snacking so differently, personalization through packaging is a great way to offer a range of products meeting every occasion.
