WASHINGTON, DC — In light of a new regulatory proposal that could impact the baking industry, the American Bakers Association (ABA) is providing its members with resources to help them navigate uncharted waters. The resources address changes in supply chain security, immigration compliance and proposed tariffs under the new administration.
Supply chain resources. Members can find up-to-date news on current issues, related legislation, report shortages and supply chain security concerns through the FDA’s website.
Immigration resources. ABA partnered with outside counsel to develop an ICE Immigration Checklist and Q&A that details what commercial bakers can expect from the renewed emphasis on immigration compliance and enforcement efforts. The resource helps bakers take proactive steps to review their operations, improve compliance and stay prepared for evolving federal involvement.
Tariff resources. Using data from the US Census and Bureau of Economic Analysis, ABA estimated the impact of proposed tariffs on the industry. Through a preliminary analysis, the association found that the combination of 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, plus a 10% tariff on goods from China, would cost the industry $432 million per year. It also noted that roughly one-tenth of food and agriculture ingredients used by commercial bakers are imported, while a majority of equipment and appliances are purchased from abroad.
