WASHINGTON — In celebration of National Grilled Cheese Day on April 12, Grain Foods Foundation (GFF) has prepared five recipes to give a childhood classic a grown-up seal of approval.

The holiday brings a host of opportunities for commercial bakeries that work with various foodservice partners and beyond. Breads of all kinds can serve as a perfect vehicle for a mountain of melted cheese and other assorted inclusions.

The health-centric recipes pair the staple bread, butter and cheese combination with nutritious ingredients and are approved by registered dietitians. The grilled cheese recipes shared include an assortment of vegetables, cheeses and additional ingredients paired with whole-grain breads from an array of brands.

While grilled cheese is a traditionally vegetarian dish, the Chicken Avocado Grilled Cheese recipe seeks to challenge the expected by pairing Arnold 12 Grain bread slices with sliced chicken, roasted red peppers, avocado and pepper jack cheese.

The vegetarian recipes combine an assortment of vegetables with the American classic, ranging from mushrooms and asparagus (as seen in the Fancy Pants Veggie Grilled Cheese recipe) to the tomato and eggplant featured in this Mediterranean take on the sandwich.

Though the recipes may be focused on the adult flavor palette, the childhood influence remains with Popeye’s Grilled Cheese, a hearty spinach and artichoke dip-flavored sandwich.
