HORSHAM, PA — Bimbo Bakeries USA (BBU) announced that its on-site microgrid system has launched at six of its bakeries in California.
The system was developed with GreenStruxure, which designed and built the microgrids, as part of an Energy Services Agreement. These microgrids — featured at BBU’s bakeries in Montebello, Placentia, Oxnard, San Luis Obispo, South San Francisco and Sacramento — include solar arrays and battery storage. BBU selected these locations based on energy intensity, increasing utility electricity costs and higher decarbonization impact.
“It is our responsibility, as part of Grupo Bimbo — the world’s largest baking company — to be a leader in sustainability,” said Chris Wolfe, senior director of environmental sustainability at BBU. “Our goal is to protect and preserve the planet. The microgrid systems at these six bakeries are another step in lowering our overall carbon footprint.”

The microgrid systems provide nearly 20% of BBU’s energy usage and save the baking company approximately 1,700 CO2e tons annually.
“Our new microgrid systems will help contribute to California’s efforts to expand the use of renewable energy in the state,” said Kevin Yavari, senior manager of corporate sustainability at BBU. “We support the state’s clean energy mission and will continue to look for ways we can back these efforts.”
BBU is working on additional sites for future deployment of microgrid systems.
The baking company held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the achievement at the Montebello bakery, which houses the largest microgrid of the six bakeries.
