IFT offers sugar reduction resources for manufacturers

CHICAGO — In order to support food and beverage manufacturers, the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) released two resources related to sugar reduction strategies.

“Reducing added sugar is top of mind for consumers, health and nutrition professionals, and product developers, but finding the right sugar alternatives for a product can be challenging,” said Anna Rosales, senior director of government affairs and nutrition at IFT. “IFT’s ‘Sugar Alternatives At A Glance’ and ‘Sugar Alternatives Overview’ are indispensable resources for those looking to efficiently reduce added sugars while satisfying consumer taste preferences.”

Both tools cover 19 common sugar alternatives, including artificial sweeteners, natural sweeteners and sugar alcohols. ‘Sugar Alternatives At A Glance’ is free to all, offering a high-level overview of the common names, commercial derivation and sweetness levels of sugar alternatives.

IFT’s member-exclusive ‘Sugar Alternatives Overview’ goes further to help food and beverage professionals. This resource includes insight into common use cases, regulatory status and substitution considerations.

Additionally, the association unveiled a special free-to-read collection related to sugar reduction from its scientific publications.

At the upcoming IFT FIRST event, set for July 13-16 in Chicago, IFT will also lead a sponsored keynote called “Reducing Fat, Salt and Sugar for Healthier Foods.”
